The blaze started when underground cables caught on fire at 2pm yesterday while 70 miners were working in a shaft, according to Xinhua.

The official Chinese newsagency reported that seven bodies had been retrieved from the face 160m underground, while 43 workers managed to escape the disaster.

The fire was put out and with the ventilation restored the search continues for the remaining miners.

The mine is estimated to produce 60,000 tonnes per annum.
