Chinese mine flood victims to remain underground

The Associated Press reported the coordinators of the rescue effort, which included pumping out the flooded pit, declared the site too dangerous to continue rescue efforts and said there is no way the bodies can be retrieved.

The fate of the nine workers trapped in a nearby smaller mine is uncertain, although none have been rescued since the flooding.

Heavy rains triggered the flooding which breached a levee on the swollen Wenhe River and sent water rushing into the mines.
