Port Waratah shipments rise

Port Waratah Coal Services' shipments are up since the start of the Japanese fiscal year in May.

Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) has increased its tonnage to 17 million tonnes since the start of the Japanese fiscal year in May, an 11% increase over the same period last year.

 

In June, PWCS shipped 5.6Mt of coal. The Carrington terminal moved 2.1Mt while 3.5Mt was loaded at Kooragang terminal.

 

The tonnage was shipped in 67 vessels for an average shipment size of approximately 84,746t and an average turnaround time of 6.5 days. At the end of June, eight vessels awaited offshore and four vessels were at the berth.

 

Of the 5.9Mt received in June, 5.7Mt were received by rail. At the end of June, 191,000t remained at Carrington terminal and 693,000t at Kooragang.

 

Of the June throughput, 69.45% was steaming coal and 30.55% was coking coal. Japan was the biggest customer, receiving 2Mt of steaming and 1.2Mt of coking coal, followed by Taiwan, which took 688,000t and 197,000t of steaming and coking coal.

 

In related news, the Jay Point Coal terminal reported it shipped 2.7Mt for the month of June, an increase of about 90.6% on June 1999's figure of 1.437Mt.

 

Hay Point typically services the mines of Goonyella, Peak Downs, Saraji, Norwich Park, Riverside, and South Walker Creek. Major shareholders in the CQCA are BHP, with 52.1%, and QCT Resources Limited, with 32.37%.

 

BHP advised that coal shipments from Queensland totaled 3.8Mt for June 2000.
