“Even though there is no operational need for a roof bolter to place a hand, or any other body part, between the inner and outer mast during operation, Fletcher is aware that some operators have done so,” the company said in a safety notice released recently.
In response to this feedback, the company developed a mast feed cylinder guard, offered free of charge to unit owners, to prevent access to the pinch point area, thus eliminating the risk of serious injury to operators.
“The pinch point between the inner and outer mast is created when the drill mast moves up or down in this pinch point area,” the company said, noting the movement can occur hundreds of times a day as part of the bolting cycle.
Fletcher officials reiterated that the mast feed cylinder was offered to owners of specific DR and CDR drills, but mines are being re-notified to discourage operators of all DR and CSR single mast roof drills from placing hands or other body parts in the pinch point area, and immediate participation is encouraged.
The company hopes mines accepting the retrofit can re-educate and discourage workers from the dangerous hazard. It noted that a mast kit was needed for every eligible single mast feed machine.
Customers owning the units can receive the mast guard kit, part number 415666, by contacting Fletcher or submitting documentation available on the MSHA website.
Post-installation documentation is also required by the manufacturer to verify receipt and placement.
Questions regarding the notification, or queries relating to a delay in receipt of the kit, can be directed to Fletcher’s risk management department at (304) 525-7811, extension 240.
