State Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the new Recognition of Prior Learning system meant skilled trade workers could earn nationally recognised qualifications in less time, and with less paperwork.
Under the previous Trade Recognition Certificates only people with a minimum of six years experience completed after the age of 21 were eligible for the qualifications.
Welford said the Recognition of Prior Learning system takes greater account of skills and experience, considering life experience, trade competencies and skills learned on the job in assessing candidates.
Workers applying for Recognition of Prior Learning will also be given help identifying skills they may need to achieve a whole qualification, and accessing relevant training.
“Recognising the skills and knowledge of experienced but unqualified trade workers in Queensland is a crucial component of the many strategies being implemented to address skill shortages," Welford said.
