The final decision to reject the mine was made following consultation between Marmion and other ministers with an interest in the proposal.
“This decision provides the people of Margaret River with certainty that the state government recognises the uniqueness of the region, both from an environmental and social perspective,” Marmion said in a statement.
Marmion’s move to reject the mine comes after he recently dismissed five appeals in objection to the Environmental Protection Authority recommendation to reject the mine.
His decision, made last December, was based upon his concern that the mine would pose serious environmental risks.
“Margaret River is a unique region with important environmental values which should be protected,” Marmion previously said.
“From an environmental perspective, this project is too risky.”
The proposed mine was expected to produce 1.2 million tonnes per annum of coal over a 20-year mine life.
