Morale low in Collinsville

Tensions remain high in the Queensland town of Collinsville, where about 400 Glencore Xstrata miners are still waiting to learn their fate.

The ABC reported on Thursday that the mine was expected to reopen, but local workers had not been told if they would get their jobs back.

A local business owner told the ABC that a town meeting on Wednesday allowed union members and business owners to share their concerns, but morale was very low.

Mobile gas plan for Gove

According to the The Australian Financial Review, Northern Territory Chief Minister Adam Giles has unveiled a potential new innovative source of gas for Rio Tinto’s Gove alumina refinery as the government continues its attempts to prevent the plant from closing.

The AFR said on Thursday that Giles had been approached this week by a venture that had offered to set up a “mobile gas facility” that could be available to supply 30 petajoules of gas for the Gove plant starting in January 2015.

ASX directors quit amid scandal

Two directors of the Australian Securities Exchange have resigned after becoming embroiled in a financial scandal in the United States.

According to the ABC, Russell Aboud and Shane Finemore will leave the ASX after their investment firm, Manikay Partners, was fined by the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Manikay was one of 23 firms fined for breeching a ban on short-selling shares during 2009.

ASX chairman Rick Holliday-Smith said the pair's decision did not raise concerns about the governance of the ASX.
