The Campbell's Creek complex earned the Underground Coal Mine South Award for exceptional reclamation of surface areas of its No. 3 underground mine from the West Virginia Coal Association and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection.
The Guyan surface mine was honored with both the Society of American Foresters Woodlands Award and the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative’s state reforestation award, recognizing the mine's reforestation of native species of trees and wildlife.
Finally, Patriot’s Logan County preparation plant earned the West Virginia Coal Association's Exemplary Reclamation of Refuse Facilities Award for its efforts to reduce environmental impact.
"We are pleased to be recognized for our reclamation efforts at two of our 14 mining complexes," Patriot president and chief executive Richard Whiting said.
Patriot Coal, a spin-off company from Peabody Energy, operates 14 mining complexes in Appalachia and the Illinois Basin and controls around 1.8 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves.
