Webb, a mining engineer and senior manager in the coal and energy sectors for more than three decades, will provide strategic leadership and steer the operational performance at Cliffs’ North American operations, including two longwall and three continuous mining complexes.
He will report to executive vice-president, president of global operations Duncan Price.
Prior to accepting the position with Cliffs, Webb served as vice-president and general manager of Midwest operations for Patriot Coal. During that time he was responsible for the producer’s operations and properties in Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana.
Webb’s career also included Freeman United Energy, where he worked for 25 years in various positions of engineering and management for underground mines, and Peabody Energy’s Kentucky properties, where he led mining, processing and terminal operations.
Cliffs owns six coal operations in West Virginia and Alabama. It also has a 45% economic interest in a coking and thermal operation in Queensland, Australia, with QCoal, JFE Shoji and China Steel.
