According to local media as well as the Associated Press, the incident occurred at about 6pm Wednesday on Highway 336 near Sheridan, Sheridan County, in clear weather.
Daniel Twohy, 43, died at the scene. He was travelling eastbound approaching the double track, which had activate lights and bells, but made no attempt to brake and slammed into the side of the train’s 73rd car.
Because the train’s operator did not know the line had been struck, the train continued until a partial derailment of the impacted car brought it to a halt.
WHP told the AP that it was waiting for toxicology test results to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
Neither the owner of the train nor its destination was released.
The news comes just days after 49-year-old Richard Furry was killed in a Georgia coal train collision where the semi-truck he was operating slid into a ditch and made contact with the train.
Georgia officials said that the incident was still under investigation to see if Furry had been attempting to beat the train or if alcohol or drugs were involved.
