According to the local Georgia news outlet the Rockdale News, 49-year-old Richard Furry was killed on January 5 when the semi-truck he was operating collided with a loaded CSX coal train.
The truck reportedly went off the roadway and into a ditch, and was then struck by the train.
Georgia state officials told the paper that the Morgan County incident was under investigation to see if Furry had been attempting to beat the train or if alcohol or drugs were involved.
Early Thursday, according to a Quincy Journal newspaper report, a state route was closed while crews cleaned up after a Burlington Northern Santa Fe derailment near Hannibal.
Officials said three cars left the tracks south of town.
An investigation into cause has begun. No reports were made of injuries, and BNSF has not released public comment on this incident.
