Monroe will succeed Christopher Hobson, who announced his plans to retire, and will take on the role on March 1.
During the transition period, Hobson will continue to oversee external environmental affairs and maintain the leadership role with the Electric Power Research Institute and the Coal Utilization Research Council.

In his new position, he will be responsible for the Southern Company Services’ environmental initiatives, including assessment of federal environmental policy, compliance strategies and the research and development of new energy projects.
