QR was able to increase annual capacity from 125Mt to 129Mt thanks to efficiency measures, upping estimates on how much traffic its lines could take.
QR chief executive Bob Scheuber told The Australian Financial Review the company next in queue received the additional capacity, but would not elaborate on which producer that was.
Two months ago BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance reportedly secured the remaining 20Mt of capacity that serves Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point ports.
With maximum capacity reached on its existing lines, QR will now look to developing new rail lines and will release a cost-benefit study to coal companies at the end of October.
