The gatherings are scheduled for May 13-14 in Lakewood, Colorado, near Denver, and May 19-20 in Charleston, West Virginia. Both days of both sessions will run from 8am to 4:30pm local time.
The final itinerary is still being worked on, but the tentative schedule for the workshops is already reflecting a full slate of topics.
The first day will begin with a keynote presentation, “NIOSH and MSHA perspectives on C&T systems”, and will be followed by technical sessions on communication basics, primary communication systems, tracking systems, and alternative communication links and interoperability.
The second day of the event will kick off with discussions by manufacturers of some of the latest systems and technology. Guests will also have an opportunity to visit the numerous vendor booths planned for each host location.
The afternoon of the final day will consist of MSHA regulatory considerations, such as Program Policy Letters and Emergency Response Plans, an overview of MSHA-approved communications and tracking systems, and a question-and-answer period.
Finally, presenters will look at system implementation issues, including power safety, electromagnetic radiation safety, electromagnetics (compatibility/interference), and survivability and reliability techniques.
“MSHA will be participating in the event and will be discussing regulatory and policy considerations relative to the implementation of these systems,” NIOSH coordinators noted, adding that NIOSH’s draft communications and tracking tutorial will be available for review by guests.
