The Datong Coal Group in Shanxi province held weddings for 10 miners on Saturday, 300m down the pit shaft, the People's Daily reported.
Mine manager Liu Suisheng told the newspaper the weddings were unprecedented nationwide, even worldwide.
In an industry known for its fatal disasters, the weddings aimed to "lessen the depressing impression" of the mining industry, Liu told the newspaper.
One of the brides married down the coal mine said the unique occasion was particularly meaningful.
"I had been considering a unique wedding, but never thought of down a mineshaft,” she said.
