Newcastle paper picks up international award

Dr Bart Buhre from the faculty of engineering and built environment said more than 350 technical papers were presented at the conference showcasing the latest in international coal research and development.

The winning paper titled, Coal Quality and Fine Ash Formation during Combustion, received the award for most the outstanding technical paper presented.

"The paper focused on the environmental issue of fine ash emissions which are produced during coal combustion, and established an improved understanding of the way in which this fine ash is formed," Buhre said.

Research for the paper paper required extensive collaboration between different universities, research organisations, and industry partners.

Authored by Buhre, Jim Hinkley, Raj Gupta and Terry Wall from the University of Newcastle and Peter Nelson from Macquarie University, the paper formed part of a research project for the Cooperative Research Centre for Coal in Sustainable Development (CCSD).
