According to the Associated Press, a Utah Labor Commission administrative judge has ordered Rockwood Casualty Insurance and Murray Energy division Genwal Resources to pay out $US565 weekly for the next 312 weeks to the family of Juan Carlos Payan.
The payments are retroactive to the date of the incident, it added.
Payan, 22, was the primary source of support to a disabled father, mother and two young siblings in Ensenada, Mexico, the AP said. The defendants initially argued against paying the benefits because the worker had two other working siblings.
In addition to the six who perished in the initial collapse, three rescuers were trapped 10 days later in attempts to reach the group. None of the bodies were ever recovered and the mine has since been closed.
