Launched earlier this month, the new program is the second in a series of initiatives by the association to reduce injuries and fatal incidents that occur through unsafe practices and behaviour. It also is supporting a record-breaking year for safety in 2008 across the nation’s coal and mineral mines.
“NMA and its member company safety professionals developed these safety training and awareness materials based on analyses of actual accident reports,” the organisation said, noting that the materials illustrated ways hazardous actions and situations could be avoided.
According to data collected by the group, 15% of accidental workplace deaths are caused by slips, trips or falls. Between 2004 and 2008, 36 miners died in slip or fall incidents.
It also pointed out that 65% of fall-related injuries typically occurred on level walking surfaces. For that reason, the NMA said, mines must look closely at proper footwear, quality walking surfaces and good overall housekeeping practices.
Additionally, operations should make a point to clean up all spills immediately and keep walkways and work areas well lit. When descending or ascending, workers should maintain three points of contact with the surrounding surface.
The group is providing the materials – which include hard hat stickers, posters and other items – to the safety directors of its member companies as well as all operations in the country. To receive a free packet, contact the National Mining Association through its website.
