The underground communications technology supplier received a standard mark licence from SAI Global after audits under the AS 3800 and ISO 9001 management systems.
NLT said the AS/NZS 3800 limited the repair and overhaul of intrinsically safe equipment to the original manufacturer or a recognised service facility that had the necessary documentation.
For repair and overhaul work underground, NLT also has to meet the National Standard for Licensing Persons for High Risk Work.
“The objective of this standard is to ensure persons have the skills and knowledge to perform high-risk work in a safe manner such as the repair and overhaul of intrinsically safe equipment,” the communications equipment manufacturer said.
“NLT now has four people trained and certified to be competent to perform this type of work.
“They are aware of details of repair and overhaul, examination and testing required to ensure safety and compliance with the original certification of the product.
“The specific protection technique was for intrinsically safe equipment and excludes other techniques such as flameproof or increased safety.”
NLT has been active in Queensland, having successfully trialled portable Wi-Fi nodes, a wireless access point using standard 802.11 protocols, and its voice over internet protocol phones at Xstrata’s Newlands underground mine in April.
