Aussie tracking approval for NLT

The approval under the new IECex standard certifies the company's entire network Intrinsically Safe.

The NLT Network is a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) designed to withstand the rigours of the underground environment.

"Now during an emergency in an underground coal mine, the miners will be able to see who and where people and assets are moving, enabling the people on the surface to direct them away from dangerous areas," said NLT Australia managing director Tim Haight.

According to Haight, NLT had been working with technology partner Wavetrend to ensure a successful design and approval of an Exia reader to integrate with the Northern Light Digital Network.

The network, based on the IEEE 802.11 protocol, encompasses NLT's Messenger Cap Lamp - an integrated communications device which enables real-time, two-way text messaging. The tracking feature enables mines to improve safety and productivity by knowing the location of assets and personnel in real time.

Both applications are managed through the NLT Software Suite.

NLT is working on achieving IS certification for its digital network in other markets with US Mine Safety and Health Administration approvals pending.
