Late on Thursday evening, Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training spokesperson Leslie Fitzwater and US Mine Safety and Health Administration spokesperson Amy Louviere confirmed to ILN neither the mine nor its miners were involved in an apparent ignition near a gas and oil well head at Catenary Coal’s Samples Creek complex in Kanawha County.
Three individuals were working on the pipeline, which is located on reclaimed land near the mine and one unidentified male was hurt.
“A [worker] for Cabot Gas has suffered a broken leg and burns from what appears to be an ignition,” Louviere said.
She said the mine’s management had reported the incident to the MSHA.
“The individual was alert and being transported to the hospital,” she said.
“An MSHA inspector, who was driving by the property, saw the ambulance and followed it to the mine site.”
Local media reported the individual’s injuries were not life threatening.
Fitzwater confirmed investigation of the incident, as it is not related to the mine, was under the direction of the state’s Department of Environmental Protection.
