On Thursday, US Mine Safety and Health Administration spokesperson Amy Louviere told ILN that the individual, identified by local media as 52-year-old Kevin Meyers, was working on February 26 at the Calvert City terminal in Marshall County and was discovered missing.

“It was believed that the victim fell from a barge where he was last seen, although there were no witnesses,” Louviere said, adding that the worker’s body was recovered about 30 minutes after it was first noticed he was gone.

“While it was believed that the victim had fallen and drowned, the victim's body was sent for medical evaluation of possible pre-existing health or medical issues.

“It has been confirmed that the victim died from drowning.”

MSHA confirmed the death was reported as mandated to the agency’s hotline and MSHA District 10 personnel responded to the incident.

A federal investigation has commenced.

Louviere said Thursday that the site was put under a 103(k) order to suspend work but it was not clear if the order was still in place at press time.

According to MSHA data, the Calvert City terminal is operated by SCH Terminal with John Hunt III recorded as controller.

The facility processes bituminous coal.
