Set for July 26-28 at the Lakeview Hotel in Morgantown, the conference, sponsored by West Virginia University, West Virginia Coal Association, the US Mine Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, is expected to attract hundred from academia, the research arena, operations and regulatory agencies.
Following Tuesday’s opening remarks by conference coordinators Syd Peng of WVU, Thomas Barczak of NIOSH and Stephen Tadolini of Minova International, experts from approximately 40 countries across the globe including the US, South Africa, Poland, the UK, Australia, Germany and Mexico will take the stage with presentations on topics such as roof fall prevention, issues with thin seam mining, numerical modeling and safe pillar extraction.
Some of the discussions will include:
- The Duncan Method of Partial Pillar Extraction at Tasman Mine – Kent Mctyer, Tony Sutherland, Donaldson Coal, Australia
- MSHA Technical Review of Proposed Mine Designs for US Underground Coal Mines – Michael Gauna, Paul Tyrna, Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center
- The Technical Progress and Problems to be Solved of Thick Coal Seam Mining in China – Jiachen Wang, China University of Mining and Technology
- Roof Bolting for Long-term Entries in Underground Coal Mines – Peter Zhang, Scott Peterson, Mike Mishra, Alpha Natural Resources
A golf outing, evening picnic and ceremony celebrating the conference’s milestone anniversary are also planned.
