Another UK Coal closure looms

Its other remaining mine, the Kellingley Colliery in Yorkshire, is expected to close in December according to a recent statement by the coal company.

This will make the Hatfield Colliery in South Yorkshire the last deep coal mine in the UK.

Taken over by the Hatfield Colliery Partnership in 2013, a group of employees, the mine has also faced production difficulties and low prices.

This mine is scheduled to close in 2016 courtesy of $A23.6 million of funding secured last year, with two-thirds coming from the UK government and the other one-third coming from the National Union of Mineworkers.
