As of Friday there were three confirmed dead and “at least six” missing, according to Antique provincial governor Rhodora Cadiao.

"They promised me they'll stop their mining operations in that area until they have recovered all the missing,” he told Associated Press on Friday.

Heavy monsoonal rainfall for consecutive days at the Semirara Mining & Power Corporation-owned mine on Panian Island in the central Philippines was behind the tragic landslide.

SMPC CEO Isidro Consunji said there were only nine workers at the site when the accident occurred, according to reports on Reuters.

“The accident happened around 3am, while the workers were working on a water system," Cadiao reportedly said.
