Motion to cap Newcastle coal exports rejected

The motion was introduced to the Senate by Senator Brown after Newcastle Council passed a similar motion earlier this month in an effort to reduce greenhouse gases, the ABC reported.

It was voted down overwhelmingly in the Senate yesterday, with no debate. Senator Brown said major political parties appear to be ignoring climate change.

“The big parties often get together to vote against motions which if they had better local knowledge they'd be supporting," he told the ABC.
