FOUR miners are trapped underground following a roof collapse at a mine owned by leading thermal coal producer China Shenhua Energy.

According to Xinhua, the collapse took place at the Huangyuchuan coal mine in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region at about 11.54pm local time on Monday night.

Rescue operations are reportedly underway.

Shenhua had 304 million tonnes of commercial coal production in 2012.
