For the week ended October 12, the agency said US mines totaled 18.9 million short tons of production, up 0.7% year-on-year and 6.7% higher than the previous week’s estimate.
Specifically, the EIA said coal production east of the Mississippi River was 7.8Mt and western coal mines totaled 11.1Mt.
Unfortunately, the lift for last week was not enough to bring numbers for the year in progress back into the black versus 2012.
US year-to-date coal production, it said, totaled 783.9Mt, or 2.2% lower than the comparable year-to-date coal production for 2012.
Figures for the week in progress will be available October 24.
Experts from the EIA have just returned to the helm after a short-lived stoppage. Last Friday, officials said the agency was forced to close due to a lapse in appropriations.
The announcement came 11 days after the start of the US government shutdown that began October 1 and ended late Wednesday.
