Leer mine under question

Arch subsidiary ICG Tygart Valley is looking into alternate locations for the shaft due to concerns from residents of fan noise and methane liberation.

DEP has requested information on limiting noise at any proposed vent shaft site and notes that it does not foresee methane-related issues, but will include related information in its report, available to local residents.

ICG Tygart Valley agreed to resubmit its original permit request as a Significant Incidental Boundary Revision (IBR) as and when alternate locations were considered.

A Significant IBR requires the company to announce the changes a minimum of four times in newspaper advertisings and allows a public comment period ending 30 days after the final ad is published.

The DEP will review any resubmitted documentation before the construction of the shaft is permitted.
