Located near Mudgee, the open cut project is targeting 220 million tonnes of thermal coal production over a 27-year mine life. The project received conditional state Planning Assessment Commission approval in May.
Wellington mayor Rod Buhr, who last week reportedly met with the Cobbora Holding Company’s general manager, has revealed that an outcome will soon be known.
“He’s very confident that we will find out whether the project is approved towards the end of this week," Buhr told the ABC.
“The final stage of that approval process is, of course, it being ticked off by the federal government.
“So he was very confident that by Thursday or Friday this week we will know something more."
The Cobbora project, which aims to mine up to 20Mtpa over the next 21 years, is expected to create more than 1100 construction and operational jobs in the Central West region plus secure the state’s domestic thermal coal supplies for decades.
