Anglo production spurt marred by Grasstree tragedy

Unfortunately a fatal incident occurred at Grasstree in December that ruined its good run of production.

Anglo American coal CEO Seamus French vowed at the time to review all aspects of the accident that killed Valley Longwall International contractor Ian Downes at the longwall mine before the operations restarted in January.

“Over the coming weeks we will review of all aspects of this tragic incident as well as our operating processes to ensure the mine is ready for a safe restart and continued safe operation,” French said.

The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines said Downes was fatally injured when part of an underground roadway wall struck him while he was pressure grouting it.

This followed a fatality at the mine in May this year when a worker was believed to have been asphyxiated by noxious gas.

Performance at Moranbah continues to be affected by longwall mechanical issues, which are not expected to be fully rectified until late Q3 2015.

Export thermal coal production increased by 2% to 9.7 million tonnes mainly due to increases across Australian and South African operations.

Australian export thermal coal production increased by 18% to 1.9Mt, due to improved productivity at Dawson.

South African export thermal coal production increased by 4% to 4.8Mt, driven by productivity improvements across all operations and export product quality optimisation.
