New Wyoming mine will buck the trend

THE coal downturn is not stopping Kentucky-based Ramaco’s plans to open Wyoming's first major coal mine in 40 years.

According to TV network WKYT, Ramaco aims to launch its Brook Mine, a few miles north of the northern Wyoming city of Sheridan, in 2016.

The Charleston Gazette reported that Brook was initially aiming for 2 million tons a year and would eventually target more than 8Mtpa.

This is considered small compared to Peabody Energy's North Antelope Rochelle mine which produces about 2Mt a week about 160km southeast of the Brook Mine site.

Brook’s nearest mine, Cloud Peak Energy's Spring Creek Mine about 32km north of Sheridan, produces about 18Mtpa.

"Small is beautiful, because we've got a mine that can be very profitable for us, but it's not so huge that it creates a lot of the financing and other logistical issues,” Ramaco CEO Randall Atkins told the newspaper.
