Counting of votes in last weekend’s election are continuing, with a LNP majority election looking less likely and the possibility of a Labor Party minority government emerging.
CFMEU Mining and Energy Division Executive Vice President Mitch Hughes said he welcomed announcements from the Federal Labor Party that will see a number of unfair employment practices face great scrutiny if they’re elected.
“We put the same asks to both sides of politics, but only the Labor Party said that they would tackle the scourge of casualisation and exploitative labour hire practices,” Hughes said.
“If elected, the Labor Party has committed to reviewing casualisation and defining what it means to be a casual employee – giving greater certainty to employees and employers.
“Labour Hire agreements will be put under the spotlight, with Labor committing to establish a new inspectorate within Fair Work Australia to monitor and licence dodgy labour hire firms that exploit workers - driving down wages and conditions for workers across the board.
“These are important changes and ones that the Steady Jobs campaign welcome. It’s just too bad that the LNP refused to support their local workers too.”
