The Northern Nevada Underground Mine Rescue Competition – developed in conjunction with the Nevada Mining Association, the US Department of Labor Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the Fire Science Academy – attracted more than 100 competitors from 16 mine rescue teams hailing from Nevada, Wyoming, Alaska, Idaho, and even Tanzania.
Taking the top prize (and second place) for the event overall was Solvay Mine of Wyoming. Third place went to Barrick Goldstrike Mines of Nevada.
The events held included a breathing apparatus competition as well as contests for gas monitoring and first aid.
“I’ve been involved with mine rescue competitions for more than 20 years and the teams this year were exceptional,” Fire Science Academy associate director Randy Squires told local media.
“We had a number of experienced competitors tell us this year’s was one of the best they’ve ever attended.”
