Included in AEP’s next group of environmental control investments are the John E Amos plant in Winfield, West Virginia, the Muskingum River plant in Beverly, Ohio, the Big Sandy plant in Louisa, Kentucky, the Conesville plant in Conesville, Ohio, and the H W Pirkey plant in Hallsville, Texas.

The Amos, Muskingum, Big Sandy and Conesville plants will install flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) systems to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions. The Conesville plant will also have a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system installation to reduce nitrogen oxide, and the Pirkey operation will receive a FGD system upgrade.

“Our investments in improving the environmental performance of our coal-fired generating stations will allow us to extend the environmental life of these plants and continue to use coal – our nation’s most abundant fuel source and the backbone of the economies in many states where we operate,” said AEP president Michael Morris. “Even with these significant investments, AEP will continue to provide some of the lowest-cost electricity available for our customers.”

A construction start date is pending design and engineering plan completion and approvals; however, tentative completion dates between 2007 and 2010 have been outlined by AEP.

AEP is one of the US’s largest electric utility generators, with more than 5 million customers in 11 states and a 36,000MW generation capacity.
