Miner dies from surface accident injuries

US Mine Safety and Health Administration spokesperson Amy Louviere told ILN the male worker, whose name has not been released, over-traveled a 90-foot highwall last Saturday afternoon while trying to establish a berm on a bench at Oxford Mining’s No 3 operation in Perry County.

“The injured miner was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, his neck broken in two places, and several cracked and broken ribs,” she said Thursday morning of the worker’s initial injuries.

“At one point he was in a coma, but regained consciousness later. He died Tuesday afternoon after family members were called to the hospital.”

Federal and state investigations are ongoing and both teams arrived at the site last Saturday after the incident occurred.

According to MSHA data, Oxford Mining and the No 3 operation are controlled by Charles Ungurean. The surface operation produces bituminous coal.

Oxford Mining is owned by Oxford Resources.
