Cat's new continuous miner

The CM235 weighs 61.2 tonnes, and has a compact design developed specifically for low to mid-seam operations. Minimum clearance height is 940mm and maximum cutting height is 3251mm.

It has a total power of 701kW, a balanced power-to-weight ratio, and loading rates of 14 to 29t per minute.

The continuous miner has the robust features of the CM200 series, but comes with enhancements, such as two 205kW cutter-head motors.

The CM235 has simplified diagnostics through its variable frequency drive-traction system, fast tramming speeds that shorten place-change times and high torque across the entire speed range.

The continuous miner is constructed with a heavy frame at the core. The frame is formed with steel plate up to 75mm thick and 50mm main support rails.

Strong pivot points with replaceable bushings have been included to provide extended service life.

The machine control unit is based on a mine-duty PLC and is designed to increase coal production and operator safety, which minimises downtime.

A microprocessor-based system controls the traction motors, minimising electrical connections and enhancing reliability.

Caterpillar said the MCU provided data logging, fast diagnostics and advanced troubleshooting capabilities.

Operators can choose to use a radio remote control unit with self-diagnostics, but both the standard and compact remotes are available depending on the operators’ preferences.

The CM235’s grease ports and fill points are centralised. Diagnostic ports and panels are located to speed the work of maintenance technicians.
