Polish coal future in the balance

Polish News Digest reported coal output dropped by two million tons to 100 million tons last year, compared to 2002 figures.

A decision on the closure of coal mines Boleslaw Smialy, Centrum and Polska Wirek is expected from the government by the end of this week.

Polish News Digest said one of the government’s largest concerns, Kompania Weglowa (KW) reported a 900 million Polish zloty (1zloty= $0.27USD) net loss on a 7.5 billion zloty revenue for 2003. The mine produced 53 million tonnes of coal for the year.
