THIRTEEN coal miners were killed on Wednesday in a Chinese mine located in Shanxi province.

The miners were sent down the mine to close off a passageway leading to an adjacent mine, and were later found dead, Xinhua News Agency said. One miner escaped alive and is being treated for injuries.

Xinhua said the miners were killed by a leakage of poisonous gas.

In another incident more than a week ago, 36 miners remain missing in a flooded coal mine in southern China.
