Siemens has contracted McConnell Dowell to complete two contracts worth about $60 million at the Kogan Creek power station in south-east Queensland. The civil contract includes the installation of about 30,000 cubic metres of reinforced concrete for the plant footings, and a joint venture contract to design and construct a 160m-high slip-formed concrete windshield with a 7m-diameter single steel flue.
The $1.1 billion, 750-megawatt power plant will be the largest power generation unit in Australia when completed in 2007-08, Siemens says.
The other two contracts are the design, procurement and construction of the Bengalon coal port and processing facilities contract in Indonesia, and a contract for the construction of the Sharjah gas pipeline in the United Arab Emirates.
The $34 million Indonesian project, awarded by PT Mitratama Perkasa and Kaltim Prima Coal, included a 1000-tonnes-an-hour coal crushing and stacking facility, coal stockpile areas, reclaiming and barge loading system, berth and service jetty and a 1.6km-long dredged channel.
Contractor Henry Walker Eltin recently won a $US1.2 million contract at the coal mine, saying yesterday "first coal was forecast in the first half of 2005".
Meanwhile, Crescent Gas Corporation has engaged Dutco McConnell Dowell to complete a 28km gas pipeline at its Sharjah project.
It has been a bumper year for McConnell Dowell, recently securing contracts at Vopak Terminal's new twin Banyan jetty at Jurong Island, Singapore; a $7 million potline mechanical contract for the Dubai Aluminium Company; and a $5 million contract from Barrick Australia to provide power to the company's new Cowal gold mine in New South Wales.
