The China office – which will encompass coal marketing, trading and business development sectors within its walls – will open during the third quarter of this year to capitalize on significant long-term growth opportunities.

Li possesses more than 20 years experience managing energy generation facilities, including coal-fired, gas and hydropower plants in China, southern Asia and the US. Over the last decade, he has served in increasingly responsible capacities for Panda Energy International.

Before accepting his new responsibilities, Li was senior director of asset management and mergers and acquisitions. He has also managed operations in Nepal, China and the United States.

“Jay’s international experience and leadership skills will be instrumental in driving Peabody’s China growth strategies as we evaluate the region’s markets and seek to develop partnerships within the Chinese coal industry,” said Peabody vice president Richard Navarre. “As the world’s largest coal company, we look forward to increasing our presence in China’s fast-growing coal market.”

Li, whose career began with the Ministry of Light Industry of the People’s Republic of China, earned a Master of Business Administration from the State University of New York-Buffalo and a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Shaanxi University of Science and Technology in Xi’an, China.
