Chinese underground miners bound for Canada

Chinese-backed coal company Canadian Dehua International Mines Group filed a project description of the Gething Coal Project in BC, which will produce 2 million tonnes of coal per annum via bord and pillar and longwall methods.

“The Gething Coal Project will require approximately 400 employees with specific skills in underground coal mining,” the document said.

“The bord and pillar and longwall mining techniques proposed for the project are only used for underground coal mines; and there are few underground coal mines in Canada.

“Management at Dehua has extensive experience and ties to operating underground coal mines in China. Dehua will likely source skilled labour from China to meet staffing requirements.”

The company recognised bringing 400 employees into small communities could have cultural and social ramifications, and pledged to work with local government and community representatives to alleviate potential impacts.
