The Star Rating Scheme recognises excellence in trade skills training among TAFE and registered training organisations, offering ratings of one, two or three gold stars in eight areas of skills shortage:
- Automotive
- Building and Construction
- Electrical
- Hospitality and Personal Services
- Manufacturing
- Metals and Engineering
- Mineral Resources
- Rural and Farming
Two gold stars were awarded to mining courses at the Hunter Institute of TAFE, New South Wales, and RTO Richards Mining Services, recognising the high quality of teaching on offer.
Richards Mining managing director Merryn Richards said the rating validates the company's position as a leading choice for training in the mining skills industry.
“We found the process to be a valuable addition to our own internal quality processes and regular self-assessment," Richards said.
Hunter TAFE faculty manager Rob Wolter said the Star Rating Scheme helps to ensure that apprentices and trainees have the right skills to contribute to the mining industry.
Western Australia's Central TAFE was recognised for its drilling division, with a one gold star rating.
Institute for Trade Skills Excellence chief executive Brian Wexham said the Star Rating Scheme gives students confidence that they are choosing the right course for their chosen industry.
“One of the biggest concerns when choosing a course is whether or not it will get people the job they want when they complete the course,” Wexham said.
“The scheme aims to recognise high performing registered training providers such as Central TAFE, and help individual schools and faculties understand exactly what their clients want from their training."
Central TAFE’s Peter Douglas said the training organisation views the Star Rating Scheme as an effective way of addressing Australia’s skills shortage.
“During this critical skills shortage period, we welcome initiatives that seek to identify and meet specific industry needs – such as the Star Rating Scheme,” Douglas said.
“They help us ensure that our students have the right skills to contribute to industry and the region’s economy.”
