The accident occurred at about 4am local time yesterday when 100 people were working underground.
While 95 were safely evacuated, five remain missing, and although rescue services are on site, ArcelorMittal said it was believed the miners had died as a result of the accident.
The company said a full investigation would be launched into the cause of the accident; however, at present the company said it believes there was no explosion.
“At this moment I do not wish to speculate about the causes of this accident, but I must state that my absolute priority as the new CEO here in Temirtau is to ensure the safety of our workers and ArcelorMittal will continue to invest heavily in the ongoing modernisation of the mines,” ArcelorMittal Kazakhstan CEO Frank Pannier said.
Indian-owned ArcelorMittal is the world's biggest steelmaker.
