Call for diesel papers

THE Mining Diesel Emissions Council has put out a call for papers in preparation for its 14th annual MDEC conference, convening this year in Toronto, Canada.

The event, set for October 5–10 at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North, will include technical presentations on diesel emissions issues, emission control technologies and other current topics surrounding industry diesel use.

Organisers are also planning a field trip to the Vale Inco Creighton underground mine and CANMET-MMSL Research Laboratory in Sudbury to review diesel equipment and emission control technologies in operation as well as diesel particulate matter (DPM) sampling and analysis instrumentation.

Midway through the week-long event, the MDEC will also offer a full-day workshop entitled “Diesel Emissions and Control Technologies” to discuss diesel engine technology fundamentals and the emissions and control innovations developed for equipment.

The MDEC said it has confirmed two keynote speakers, Southwest Research Institute representative Dr Magdi Khair and Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute’s Dr Joe Mauderly. The former will highlight the full-day workshop session and the latter will take the stage during the week to present on diesel emissions health effects.

A roundtable discussion on a diverse group of topics and multiple days of equipment exhibits onsite at the conference venue are also part of the itinerary. Organisers would like attendees to suggest potential roundtable topics and include them with their registration packets.

In preparation for the event, a call for papers has opened. Chair Dr Mahe Gangal is accepting proposed paper abstracts of 500 words or less by June 23 under any of the following topics:

Diesel engine and emission reduction technologies

Regulatory and health issues

Nanoparticles and NO2 reduction

Underground and surface mines studies

Off-road technologies

Fuels, lubricants and alternate fuels

Maintenance and ventilation

Authors of those papers selected for presentation at the event will be notified by July 7 and approved authors will have until September 8 to submit final files in electronic form. All papers must be approved by the author’s organisation, MDEC noted.

To register for the conference, contact the MDEC.
