Wilson was most recently BHP’s president of stainless steel materials and oversaw the closure of the Ravensthorpe nickel mine in Western Australia this year, a move that cost 1800 workers and contractors their jobs.
In his 17-year career with BHP, he has also served in executive roles at the company’s Nickel West, Samancor Chrome and Bayside Aluminium businesses.
"Jimmy’s depth of experience in both operational and executive roles will be invaluable in his leadership of the energy coal group,” BHP Billiton chief executive ferrous and coal Marcus Randolph said.
“I look forward to working with Jimmy as we continue to develop our energy coal business."
Randolph commended Murray for his tremendous role in delivering the successful energy business.
BHP stainless steel materials chief financial officer Gerard Bond will assume the role of acting customer sector group president of stainless steel materials.
Wilson will be based in Sydney.
