A new best-in-class low-maintenance LHD bucket

Over the past three years, we've spent hundreds of hours underground across continents, talking to customers and learning about their requirements.

Regardless of the application, we heard the same concerns repeatedly. Existing LHD bucket designs caused too much maintenance downtime and were not meeting miners' operational needs.

Our customers needed LHD buckets that require lower maintenance. The maintenance costs are too high, from related machine downtime to ongoing labour shortages. 

Two significant problems stood out:

1. Frequently changing out multiple worn heel blocks on buckets was costly and time-consuming. 
2. Bulkheads were causing damage to mine support structures and utilities and increasing maintenance requirements.

Our new LHD bucket tackles the problem of high maintenance requirements from multiple angles.  The bucket design simplifies maintenance by removing bucket features that create additional costs and optimising material selection and placement.

High-quality alloy castings in corners mean no mechanic or weld-on-heel blocks.

Tapered top corners reduce the risk of damage to underground utilities and support, with the added benefit of increasing the bulkhead strength of the bucket.

The result is a bucket that provides the highest possible machine uptime for LHDs.

We collaborate closely with customers to identify opportunities for refinement, considering digging conditions and maintenance requirements. These partnerships have resulted in important product engineering updates and improved performance.

We recently partnered with a new underground copper and iron mine in Chile to help them improve their current OEM LHD bucket life. Their main objective was to increase machine availability and reduce their OEM bucket repair costs. A CR representative proposed to trial Wearpact™ lip fitment to reach their goals.

As a result, the experienced field technicians representing CR inspected the old buckets to understand the wear pattern and configured a fitment to maximise blade life under operational conditions. A Wearpact system with mid-life corners was recommended to maximise blade life.

Furthermore, the Wearpact system achieved 1200 hours of life, 500 more than the previously installed system. The bucket reached 5800 hours before the rebuild, saving seven bucket changeovers and increasing machine availability by 70 hours in 16 months.
