SEASONED mining consultant of four decades, Jim Ramsay, is a man on a mission to help resolve the two-pronged dilemma which Western Australia currently faces.

Firstly, both capital city Perth and the state of WA are, very sadly, awash with homeless people. Secondly, the state's powerhouse revenue generator, the mining sector, is facing a desperate shortage of workers for the many operations across multiple commodities.

Clearly taking the view that "if you want something done, ask for help from a busy

person", Ramsay found himself dialling the number of Basil Zemplas, Lord Mayor of Perth City.

Zemplas is probably the most recognisable face in Western Australia and in this important role has been driven to find solutions to the blight of homelessness since the day he took office in October 2020.

In Zemplas, Ramsay found both an ally and a sympathetic ear. With the guidance of Zemplas, Ramsay was led to St Bart's, which since 1963 has been Perth's leading not-for-profit providers of accommodation and outreach services for vulnerable Western Australians.

Ramsay walks the talk, as he himself became homeless at the age of 14, and just two years later found a working home at Comet Gold Mine after living in creek beds and knocking on doors in search of employment.

"I worked my way through the industry and ended up covering positions such as machine operating right though to superintendent, project, mine and operations management," said Ramsay.

Now with a track record of experience in open cut mining services, heavy equipment, project performance, process improvement and cost management across the gold and iron or sectors, Ramsay feels it is time to give back.

"I have now set up my own mine service business, I would like to give back and support our state's homeless … pay it forward, so to speak."

Ramsay says he believes that if we focus on training our own people as an investment in both parties, long term and not just for compliance reasons. So, the question arises: ‘why employ homeless people?'. The answer is, in fact, ‘why not'?"

With this in mind, Ramsay launched B2B Mining 101 Pty Ltd, an independent contractor which has as its main focus the provision of open cut mining services, and homeless engagement in Mining with candidates available now.

"As a leader, I focus on building a strong, safe team and implementing best practices in mining methods. I have successfully completed several projects for various clients, achieving cost savings and operational improvements. My goal is to continue to provide high-quality mining services that meet the needs and expectations of my customers. Help me help you and our homeless, B2B Mining organises everything for you."
