Coal 2019 kicks off with star geotech line-up

Geotech and safety will be the focus of the first day.

The geotech session is being co-chaired by Anglo American and Kestrel veteran Jason Emery.
 
Colwell Geotechnical Services principal Mark Colwell will also present on empirical models for geotechnical design in underground coal mining.
 
Mine Advice principal geotechnical engineer Russell Frith will talk about a causation mechanism for coal bursts during roadway development based on the major horizontal stress in coal.
 
University of Southern Queensland Professor Ali Mirzaghornanali's presentation will focus on strength properties of grout for strata reinforcement.
 
Later in the afternoon the focus will switch to safety with Simtars executive mining engineer Martin Watkinson discussing the outcomes from 21 years of level 1 emergency exercises in Queensland and chair of the technical committee of Standards Australia Ian Webster talking about reliable referencing for fixed and machine mounted gas detectors.
 
Yesterday an intensive day of workshops were held in which the efficiency and efficacy of face curtains for respirable dust mitigation on a continuous miner and dust emission control options were discussed.
