Ratification of the new five-and-a-half-year deal will take place June 17 at 125 local union locations across the US. If approved, the agreement would become effective July 1.
The UMWA said no further details of the proposal would be released until Wednesday, when local union contract explanation meetings are planned.
“This has been a long and intense process,” UMWA president Cecil Roberts said.
“We had many issues to confront, especially with respect to our pensions, health care and wages. But through the strength and solidarity UMWA members have historically demonstrated, we were able to meet those challenges.”
The Bituminous Coal Operators Association, based in Washington, DC, declined media comment.
The group primarily represents the unionized subsidiaries of Consol Energy. About 3,000 of Consol’s 8,600 employees are UMWA members.
According to a recent US Securities and Exchange Commission filing by the producer, union mines make up 49% of the 62.4 million tons the miner produces annually.
